I Love Minivans!

That's not really true. I hate minivans, they are ugly and make me feel old. But, I am super excited to have our minivan back. By this time next week Rob and I will be towing that beat up mom-mobile with the Uhaul back to Tennessee.

I have despised the minivan since the day we bought it. We only got it because the kids were so excited and loved it so much. NEVER take your children car shopping, it will not end well! The minivan was cheaper than an SUV that would fit us all, so we decided to go with the car the kids chose. We've had the minivan for something like five or six years. I try my hardest to never drive it! I made the van Rob's car pretty quickly. But, now that we have the monster truck (that I WILL NOT drive) I am looking forward to that stinky, dirty old van!

The van has taken a beating over the years, mostly due to the kids, but I have hit a few poles in that thing too. When we first bought it I had to use it to drive to Santa Barbara for work. I stayed in a hotel while I was there. The morning I was going to leave for home I met my brother for breakfast. He was living in Santa Barbara at the time pretending to go to college. As, I was leaving the hotel parking lot I hit a pole. I have no clue why the parking lot exit had a pole on each side of the driveway, but it did. It was a yellow pole, like the ones at the gas station that keep you from hitting the gas pumps. It wasn't bad so I didn't tell anyone. I met my brother for breakfast then started the long drive home.

About three years after that I hit another pole. This time our van wasn't so lucky! I was driving the girls to school one morning (when we were living in the mountains) and I was really tired. Rob NEVER puts gas in any of the cars so I had to stop and get gas on the way to school. I don't know what I was thinking but as I pulled into the gas station I hit the pole, you know, one of the ones I was talking about earlier, at gas stations. I hit the pole, big time. I smashed a pretty good portion of the passenger side rear door. The thing is, as I heard the crunching of car metal, I kept going. I didn't stop and try to back up, I just kept driving. After I parked at the pump, I got out to look at the van, that's when I noticed something...the gas tank was on the OTHER SIDE! I smashed up our van and I wasn't even on the right side to pump gas! It was super embarrassing. I ended up leaving and not getting gas until later.

We have used that van for a lot of trips, too. So, while it has been beaten to heck by our crazy family it has also taken us so many fun places. I am excited to drive again. I hope I remember how!

  1. Looks like Minivans bring you bad luck hunny. Hope things get better. Sounds like you have the kind of luck that I have. but like I say "If I didnt have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all."

    1. Your saying could definitely be my life motto. LOL. I do think though that my husband's car luck is worse than mine, he has been involved in 3 or 4 accidents in the last 3 years, all not his fault. One resulted in my favorite car being totaled and the last was his motorcycle accident! I am much luckier (is that a word?) than he is, so at least I've got that going for me! :)

  2. Totally sounds like something I would do!! But at least you have it back :) And i hear that vans are so easy with kids, so enjoy having it!!! Imagine if you had another car that couldn't have handled poles, maybe it's been a blessing in disguise....

    1. It probably was a good thing we were in the van. The girls would have been much closer to that door that hit the pole if it weren't for the van. But, if the van wasn't a giant, awkward beast I may have never hit a pole at all. :)

  4. Hi, linking up from Dysfunction Junction. Mini vans are a pain, but necessity for big families. I have to haul so many kids around in mine. They are definitely not well designed for the most part. I hit poles in another car. So far, knock on wood, my daugher is the only one who has hit anything in the van. she was backing up and hit a mail box. :( It was funny later though.

    1. We had an older Chevy Suburban that we sold to buy something bigger to tow our travel trailer. I preferred that over the van. I almost want to sell the van and buy another SUV but our van isn't worth much and I really hate the idea of having another car payment so I will drive that thing until it won't drive anymore! We all laughed about the pole thing after the pain of embarrassment wore off :)

  5. Found you by way of Dysfunction Junction. I have been able to THUS FAR avoid a minivan even though it is my husband's dream vehicle. He put quite a bit of pressure on me last fall but I came out victorious. But I hit things too. Mainly curbs. That pop the front tires. More than once. I know. I am going to subscribe so I can offer you support or some sort of virtual fist bump when a pole run-in may or may not happen again! :)

    1. I'll definitely take that virtual fist bump in the event of any pole bumping happening again and just in case one of those pesky curbs gets in your way again! :)
